What are Stem Cells?
Stem Cells are a class of undifferentiated cells. This means they have the ability to develop into any type of cell that our body needs. Stem cells respond when the body is in need of repair due to injury or illness.
Stem Cells in Skin Care
In skin care, stem cells are animal or plant derived. More specifically, stem cell extracts are commonly used in skin care. These extracts are often rich in antioxidants and may provide growth factors to help renew and repair the skin. They are different to human stem cells but have somewhat of a similar function, they have the ability to self-renew and self-repair. Plant stem cells are actually stronger than human stem cells. The thing about Stem cells is they cannot jump species. For example, apple stem cells are great for apples, but they won’t have the same effect on a human. That is not to say they don’t benefit the skin in a different way.
Why are stem cells great for your skin?
Stem Cells benefit the skin because they are packed full of antioxidants which fight free radicles that can damage the skin. They nourish skin cells and promote cell turnover and increases collagen production.
Benefits of Stem Cells in Skin Care
- Anti-ageing – ability to boost collagen synthesis
- Anti-inflammatory – helping repair the skin
Remember as with all skin-care ingredients, not all products are created equal and not all plants show efficacy with their stem cells. When dealing with Stem cells in skin care it’s important to look for brands that have clinical trials and results to back up their claims.
