What is Skin Needling?

Perth Skin needling is also referred to as Microneedling or Collagen Induction Therapy.  Skin needling aims to increase the collagen production in the skin. It is a minimally-invasive, non-surgical procedure that involves the use of a microneedling device to create a controlled skin injury. Your skin has a self-rejuvenating function that is capable of significantly reducing blemishes caused by acne, trauma, pigmentation and a range of other ailments. Skin Needling activates this process by causing tiny punctures across the treated area. As your skin heals, it produces collagen which forms a new layer of fresh tissue, creating a more youthful appearance on the surface and fighting antibodies beneath.

Dermapen Skin Needling treatments are designed to create a safe healing response within the body to ignite natural collagen and elastin production from within the skin, without harsh side effects and downtime, along with repairing the surface layers to result in healthier skin; looking brighter, tighter, more even toned, refined pores and reduced wrinkles.

After a thorough consultation your therapist will determine the required response necessary to treat your specific concerns. As the treatment is relatively pain free and well tolerated we do not apply a topical numbing cream. Numbing creams can interfere with the desired response in the skin. 

After your skin is thoroughly prepped and cleansed, your therapist will then pass the Dermapen device over the skin, completing a number of passes over each area being treated. The devices tiny microneedles will pierce the skin creating micro injuries to the epidermis and dermis. Pinpoint bleeding can occur during the procedure depending on the required response and the penetration depth of the needle. This part of the procedure only takes a few minutes to complete. You can expect to feel a slight tingling sensation. Your skin will begin to feel quite warm and tight.

Finally your therapist will apply a calming and soothing sheet mask. After the mask is removed the appropriated serums, moisturisers and sunscreen will be applied to the skin.

It is normal to experience some dryness, redness and mild inflammation after your treatment, lasting for no more than a few days, depending on the depth of penetration of the needles.

Following the treatment, you will be provided with post treatment care instructions and homecare product recommendations to help support your skin. It is essential to follow your post treatment care instructions in order to ensure optimal results.

The number of skin needling procedures depends on the individual skin condition. We recommend 3 – 4 treatments for most skin conditions. More sessions may be required for severe scarring or severely sun damaged skin.

The treatments are performed at 4 – 8 weekly intervals to allow for collagen synthesis. It can take up to 12 weeks from the initial treatment for results to become visible due to the production and synthesis of new collagen and elastin. 

Occasional side effects of skin needling are increased skin sensitivity and erythema (like sunburn), bruising, crusting and light flaking in the days following the procedure.
